Monthly Archive for August, 2010

This year we won’t be doing a classic, run of the mill Christmas contest. Instead of the usual Christmasy tralala, we will approach the season from a different direction and have some awesome gifts for the winners.
First thing’s first: the topic: cute designs are a big hit at laFraise, but they should never really be too over-the-top sugar sweet. That’s why we have come up with a topic that should hit the spot, whether you are submitting a design or voting on it: Bloody Cute. I don’t think I have to interpret the multiple meanings for you and I expect this to be a joy for both spectator and designer!
So, let’s take a look at what Santa Claus has hidden in his sack of goodies. The winning designer will get the €1,000 for the print along with a Wacom Intuos4L pen tablet (I’m really jealous!).
Our winners podium will be very tempting this time around: second place will also receive the Wacom Intuos4L pen tablet, while the third place winner will get a Pantone colour chart and a monitor calibration tool.
Who will be able to join Gprod’s Cute Killer in this uncontested corner of laFraise? That is the question which will be answered at the end of September.
Designs can be submitted between 30 August and 13 September 2010 at 3:30 pm CET. Voting will continue through the following week.
I wish you all the best, and don’t forget to have fun!

The Big Bang Theory by GUS
GUS tells is his big bang theory after the release of his funny “The Big Bang Theory”
Could you introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? Who are you, how and why did you get into graphic design?
Hi,
First of all thanks for this new selection, it’s always a pleasure to be selected at laFraise.
As for my passion for drawing, it’s all thanks to my grandmother, she taught at les Beaux Arts. She specialized in art for children and she used me as a guinea pig for the first few years of my life. Thanks to her, I was exposed to just almost every artistic form: drawing, paint, sculpture, engraving … When I was 6, she decided to stop with her experiments during an engraving exercise; wax engraving with a blowtorch in the dark. Ever since, I focused mostly on drawing, it is less risky … although that the other day, I did stick myself in the stomach with a HB pencil – the pencil was in my pocket with the lead was facing up…
Moving onto graphic design, except for my experiences with the Beaux Arts, I never attended any real illustration courses. I studied industrial design, but drawing has always been a passion. I’ve followed the work of diverse graphic designers and illustrators so I could learn from them and then learn to draw by myself.
Tell us the story behind “My first playlist”? What inspired you and how did you create the design? Did you encounter any difficulties?
Honestly I do not know what inspired me. Most of the time, I draw kind of automatically. I scribble and then a character emerges from others and then I try to imagine a universe, a joke, a situation. I see myself much more as a Sunday illustrator, rather than a real illustrator who’s looking to dig even deeper into his style. Above all, I draw for pleasure.
Have you ever had a lack of inspiration and what do you do when that happens?
I use drugs No seriously, I sometimes have lack of inspiration and I’m quite irritable when that happens. The best way to get over lack of inspiration? I recommend it to everyone as I’ve experimented it with friends and it works – the best way is to………………………………………………………
Who is your favorite artist/designer at the moment? Why?
I do not have any particular favorite artist / illustrator. But at the moment, I’m fond of NIARK1, Mcbess, Tougui & Jublin’s work, if I would name a few. I love their characters’ illustrations, the quality of the drawings, and the universes that can come out of these. I recommend visiting a VIK MUNIZ exhibition and discovering his work – he is an amazing artist.
Calling all our fraisiens & fraisiennes chefs …
I thought I would think a little outside the box and came up with a fun game (with prizes)! The rules are simple: you have to create your own recipe (cakes, pasta, salads, pizzas, deserts …) with … with … STRAWBERRIES! You can still enter even if the recipe is not your own invention, but it’s not enough to simply post it – you have to MAKE it and prove it Nevertheless innovation will be strongly appreciated!
Briefing :
1) Create a recipe with strawberries as ingredient
2) Write down your recipe
3) Take a picture of your finished dish
4) Post the recipe as a comment from the post “Recipe with strawberries” in NOTES/Facebook
5) In parallel, send your recipe with the picture + your full name and/or your Facebook name to jeux@lafraise.com
ATTENTION!
▪ A special album « Strawberries recipe» will be created and into which I will post the pictures – so please do not post by yourself!
▪ One recipe per person
▪ Photo of your recipe is mandatory

2nd reward: 1 t-shirt à 17 Euros
3rd reward: 1 t-shirt à 13 euros
Dates:
Dates: 20 August to 9 September
The winners will be announced on 13 September
This originally started out as a client based playing card project but once I realized the scope of it I decided to bring a few other artists on board. Other artists consisted of fellow BSV members Cuypi, ZombieCorp and Niark. All 3 designers I got to know over the last few years and had grown to respect as individuals and artists. Our styles all seemed to work together to create an overall theme and feel.
You’ll of course recognize all 3 artists as laFraise designers :)
This project was started late last year and is still in production. No word yet on when these will become available to purchase, but I will def let everyone know.
