We at laFraise are on a recent cute and sadistic trip – “How to become cute” is this week’s winner! This shirt fits well into Pasquéoz’ series of informational t-shirts for animals, like the recent selection Where to attack. Congrats to Pasquéoz!

Pyrus Carnivorus – The Fruit - by Georgeslemercenaire

A motiv designed in 4 hands, a wonderful cooperation for a fanciful design, we wanted to know how is it possible to work in 4 hands with the distance  … We got the answer in this interview.

Hi Georges and Vinsse

Could you please introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? Who are you, how and why did you get into graphic design?

G : As some of you already know, we are brothers and we come from Toulouse, but we prefer to keep our identity secret for security reasons … (as the Zounours lobby has put rewards on our heads).
V : We’ve been drawing for a couple for years now but it was a long lasting unemployment period that gave us the opportunity to spend time on comics, then on illustration and graphic design.
G : As for me I’ve started graphic design while I was working on small clothing brands (with the help of a friend of mine who is stylist) and recently I got the chance to work for a bigger brand, but only every so often. I do not consider myself a professional in graphic design but more like a drawing’s mercenary.
V : As for me, Georges introduced me laFraise and then I discovered the world of vectors. These days I work with illustrator, I do not consider myself as a graphic designer (even if I earn most of my money from it) but I consider myself a professional scribbler.

Let’s talk about the new design “Pyrus Carnivorus” designed in 4 hands. Where does the idea come from and why did you create it? How did it happen that you work together? Who created the design? Is it simple to work together, especially when you do not live in the same city, how did you organize it?

V : With Pyrus, we tried to create a new style from our distinct skills: a studied design and cute at the same time.
G :Vinsse sent me the idea and I created most of the tree, then we have adjusted the colours and some details with a correspondence of 40 emails (and some drinks); then Vinsse worked on the vector part and he took care of the shaded tones of the leaves …
V : Working together is something natural for us and this hasn’t changed since we do not live anymore in the same city (I do not live far from Brest and Georges is located near Carcassone)

Have you ever had a lack of inspiration and what do you do when that happens?

V : I drink a cigarette and smoke some tea … no to say the truth, I have a notebook in which I already have a never ending list of good or bad ideas to create …
G : Let’s be honest, when I have a lack of inspiration (Or I’m getting too lazy), I watch movies (at the moment I’m watching Hong Kong B series), I read mangas (I’m at the end of GEN) or comics (especially old ones bought on flea market as I am a nostalgeek), I play videogames (every kind of game), and then do it until the time works for me.

Who is your favorite artist/designer at the moment? Why?

V :There are a ton of artists we I love, especially on laFraise, with different styles , Pandaluna, Mathiole, Draco and plenty of others. I love the american school with ilovedoodle or alex solis…
G : I do not have any favourite artist, but to give some strawberry names, in addition to those Vinsse talked about, I would say that I love Akrapf (He’s really very very bright), then anythinggoes (Recently printed here), FrigoBanjo, MrWayne, Short, LOOK, Casajordi, Duza, Felixtarck, Flambi, Polynothing and lots more that I forgot.

Bloody cute: the winners

From Dave (Crew), on 2010-09-23 at 15:30

I’d first like to thank everyone for this fantastic contest! It was loads of fun, with a gallery full of really good designs and a total of 279 submissions accepted. Yeah! Making a choice was, as always, very bloody difficult. We finally decided to select two designs for printing (this will change the prizes a little). The lucky winners of the Bloody Cute Contest are:

First place: Print on 500 laFraise shirts
+ 1 Wacom INTUOS4 L graphic tablet

121881

Cute Cat by happyfish

We came to a decision within a few minutes for this design – now we just need to decide with happyfish which color shirt we will use (cream or light blue…)

•••

Second place: Print on 500 laFraise shirts
+ 1 Pantone Colour Guide  and 1 calibration tool

121741

Pomelo is dead by Ted Boundy

Ted is back with this gruesome design! And we are very happy to send another of his designs to the printer.

•••

Third place: 1 Pantone Colour Guide  and 1 calibration tool

121920

Marie was really, really sad that she wasn’t able to convince the crew to award a third print for the Contest (she was hoping to see this on a hoodie).

•••

Honorable Mention: 1 free shirt

121792

to Lufograph. This was another one of our favourite submissions, and he submitted several good designs for this contest. Certainly worth a mention!

Some encouragement for the designer: we found the style exceptional, but there wasn’t enough support from the community

Hello folks,

On Oct 18th we will release “Delicious” by Vinsse. This time you will be the ones to ask the designer a question.

So, what’s the one thing you’ve always wanted to ask a laFraise designer? One question per person is allowed!

I won’t be able to ask Vinsse all of the questions you send me, only about 15 of them. So, choose your question wisely. Send your questions by Friday 1 October to jeux@lafraise.com.

I look forward to hearing what you have to ask!

We all tip our hats to Anythinggoes for his winning design Patience.
Convict #2307 impressed us with his patience, too.

Patience
Limited edition print on 500 yellow t-shirts.

Second place: 1 free tee shirt

121303

FANTOME Solid Coated by Dsens

Nice design, but it’s a bit too much of an inside joke for designers, and even some of them don’t even know Pantone © yet.

Third place: 1300 brouzoufs

Born to be geek by pix-L

The character is a bit too young for us (childish even). And where are his parents to refill his batteries with food?

Crows valley by Quinelas

This week, we honour crows with this  refined design CROWS VALLEY. Quinelas tells us how the idea came out.

Hi Quinelas

- Please introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? How and why did you get into graphic design?

Hello LaFraise Community! My name is Rodrigo Chinellatto, aka Quinelas around here in Brazil, aka only Chinellatto in other places. I am 26 years old, I am a designer and Illustrator. Nowadays, I am responsible for the art department for a company and also produce some freelance illustrations.

- Tell us the story behind “Crows valley”? What inspired you and how did you create the design? Did you have any difficulties?

I got the idea for “Crows Valley” during a week in which I was feeling particularly insecure. I was walking home from work, and I saw some pigeons in a square. I thought it was awesome, but I also figured that pigeons are not that stylish…lol. Thinking of that, I’ve decided to use crows instead, and mixed some of those insecure feelings. That’s how “Crows Valley” was born. The curious part of it is that the idea of making the group of crows in the form of a bigger one happened by accident. By the time I was finishing, I realized that I’d created a similar form subconsciously, and moved on from that point.

- Have you ever had a lack of inspiration? What do you do when that happens?

My solution for this is to walk around aimlessly, disconnect from the world, look at people, objects. I normally think about my childhood and things that make me laugh, things that have disturbed me and some that still do. I always keep a notepad with me, to jot down any sudden ideas.

- Who is your favorite artist/designer at the moment? Why?

It is hard to tell you just one name. I like the excellent North American Alex Soles, and the Brazilan designers / illustrators: Rubes Scarelli (Rusc) – who has made me love cartoons again with his unique style, Ike Motta, with his genial ideas and great vectorial art, Rogério Puhl (Puhl), who has created a world of his own in his style and the young Rafael Pereira (Hafaell), who has an astonishing (even disturbing) trace.
