Symphony for a mermaid

Symphony for a mermaid by MrWayne

This very well composed design sings a song of its own and invites you into the magical world of the high seas. Impressed with the 3D feel to the design! A clear choice for one of this week’s winners. Bravo MrWayne!

Very very old movie

They don’t make them like they used to! A great play on the quintessential classic movie (a.k.a. very, very old movie). Georges goes old school on us with this winning design.

Don’t we all wish we had one of those buttons? Fun idea with some tough competition this week.

A cute design with a scary edge to it. Certainly something we like here at laFraise. Again, a tough week, but a deserved 3rd place.

Interview from Puhl

From Nathalie (Crew), on 2011-01-26 at 19:00

Gran Hermano

Gran Hermano by Puhl

A nice tee shirt that glows in the dark and a nice interview with its designer.

Hi Puhl,
Could you introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? How and why did you get into graphic design?

My name is Rogeio Puhl, I am thirty years old. I am a design / art director and I am in love with what I do. I’ve always liked to draw and paint stuff, and after putting a lot of effort into this passion, it became my profession. I graduated in the Drawing, Painting and History of Art courses in the School of Arts in Chapecó (my city). It took eight years to complete my studies. After graduation, I started as a trainee in a PR agency, worked seven years as Art Director in some other agencies, and started a studio with three partners. Nowadays, I’ve started a new challenge: my own studio (Estúdio Puhl), where I can create freely. My dream has come true.

Tell us the story behind “Gran Hermano”? What inspired you and how did you create the design? Did you encounter any difficulties?
An important piece of my work is the inspiration I get from the universe of kids. Inspired by lucidity and the make-believe world, the project Gran Hermano was invented within this subject – as well as much of my work – by exploring magic, playing with imagination and trying to give the sensation that there’s a little more than you see with your eyes. I didn’t find it very difficult, but the job took time because of the extent of the details. Grand Hermano is part of a project I’ve developed, that portraits human beings occupying all the natural environments without giving any consideration to the damage they are causing to it.

What is your favourite artist/designer at the moment? Why?
My biggest idols are comic book artists, because I’ve gone through a lot of comics. They are: Dave McKean, Frank Miller, Sam Kieth. I’m also very fond of the Brazilian graffiti artists “Os Gêmeos.

Music or books? What are you reading/listening to at the moment?
Music inspires me. I like rock, and always listen to it when I am drawing. I listen to: Elvis, Beatles, Raul Seixas, Jimmy Hendrix, Tim Maia, Mutantes, Modest Mouse. Recently I’ve found a very cool Brazilian band called “Cordel do Fogo Encantado”. Songs open the mind, and I can disconnect from the outside world and create my designs.

What do you think are the real pleasures in life?
Create new illustrations, listen to music, travelling, going to new places, enjoying friends and family, finding happiness in small things like fishing or playing video games, having a cold beer after a very tiring work day.

What did you want to do when you grew up?
Since I was six, I’ve always said I would be an illustrator. And now, I’ve fulfilled that because I work in what I love in my own Studio.

Salty or sweet? What’s your favourite food?
Salty food. Chicken cutlet, french fries and rice, cheese sauce.

What are your expectations for 2011?
Estúdio PUHL” has just been born and it’s a very big professional accomplishment for me. I want to keep doing my work and enjoy my family and friends as much as I can.

Thanks
Rogério Puhl

Interview georgeslemercenaire – 2nd round

Pacmoon

Pacmoon by georgeslemercenaire

Georgeslemercenaire gives us a funny and nice interview for the release of Pacmoon, a funny t-shirt.

Hi georges, are you ready for a second round interview?

Yep even ready for a third one if you’d like :-)

Nath lf crew: Could you say a bit about Pacmoon? Is it some kind of honor to Pacman?

Nope it is a drawing about the PAC (French for Common Agricultural Policy) and I’m very much into space-agriculture politics. It’s funny that people think this trend refers to video games all the time :-)

Clémentine : Were you traumatized by Pad man as a kid ? Why do you love it so much? Have you played Pac Man on the Atari 2600 as a kid? I’ve played it for hours …

Of course I played it as a kid but not that much. I was much more traumatized by William Leymergie (William Leymergie is a French TV presenter who sang the Pacman cartoon medley in the early 80’s) than by the game itself which was already old school when I started playing it. I haven’t played video games for 7 or 8 years and I have re-discovered the Arcade Emulation. Great symbols like Mario or Space Invaders, everybody knows them even without having played them. I think they are icons of our generation and an interesting and everlasting theme.

YouTube Preview Image

Nath lf crew : A propos Atari, do you like video games and which was your first one

I can’t really remember the first game, but it was probably Dungeon Master on the Atari 520Ste. It was great but I don’t have the time anymore. I play every so often and I need to finish Zelda on DS and Fable 3, then Masseffect 2 and AC Brotherhood and deadsp ….

Nath lf crew : Do you like to go on the moon or another planet ?

It would be cool indeed! I would go there and make a big illustration in the lunar dust and since there is no wind, it would stay for millions of years or until some stupid idiot walks over it … But we can even take this a step further: hyperspace is just around the corner. I would go to an unknown galaxy, or maybe a pulsar, they are cute: J And then I would jump into a black hole to see what’s on the other side.

Sophie D : How many times do you need to create one of your wonderful masterpiece?

Thanks for the compliment :-)  It depends. It can take me 2 hours to draw with a pencil but it could also take 6 to 8 hours depending on the number of elements and details for the colouring and the texture under Photoshop. I go slowly and most of the time, I do it wrong, so I start all over again from the beginning. So let’s say 8 hours.

Nath lf crew : Have you been spoiled by Santa Claus this year?

I’ve been asking this f…head for a hover board for 20 years and I haven’t see it yet! Anyway, I’ve been a nice boy this year and I haven’t been rewarded, that’s unfair!

Nath lf crew : What are your expectations for 2011?

I want to finish lots of comic projects which I’ve been working on for a long time and it would be cool to finish them. And some prints here and there, that would be cool as well :-)

Nath lf crew : What is the latest movie you’ve watched ?
Rubber“ until I laugh to tears but I almost fell asleep …

Nath lf crew : Your favorite 2010 album?
Beat torrent but I admit that I haven’t listened to anything new.

Nath lf crew : If you could change something, right now, what would you change ?
My nose, it is like a potato.

How to become cute

How to become cute by Pasquéoz

Does Pasquéoz love or hate cats ? Find it out in this nice interview.

Hi Pasquéoz,
Nice to talk to you again and for a second round interview!
Hello! I’m glad as well!

Nath (lf crew): How did you create “How to become cute”? It is quite a funny idea, revenge to cats?
Actually the idea came naturally! It was even logical even if I do not have anything against cats. I even admit to have got real pleasure into choosing the torture tools, it might be the time to make some points with myself and ask me questions J

Multi Crass’ : Were you the kind of guy who tormented animals as a kid ?
Not at all even the contrary! Even when I crushed an ant, I always tortured my spirit thinking about the one just behind and how it could have reacted to see its mate crushed on the floor. To avoid that I used to crush the one behind and the ones after, so that no one would suffer to see a killed mate!

Nath (lf crew): What is beauty for you?
For me beauty is …
An abstract notion linked to numerous aspects of human being. Beautiful is defined as a characteristic from something through a sensorial experience and which brings a feeling of joy or satisfaction. In that sense, beauty comes from appearances as shape, visual aspect, movement and sound.
Yep all came from me, Wikipedia? do not know ….

Multi Crass’ : Omelette with champignons or cheese fondue?
oker : Omelette without champignons and fondue bourguignonne !

Multi Crass’ : Have you got a child’s dream like being a policeman, fireman or stuntman ?
I wanted to be a superhero that saves the nice people and kills the bad ones (original …)
Not a hero like monster, werewolf, vampire, something that scares like hell but that we admire because he is super nice and kicks ass! (And who doesn’t wear tight trousers)

Multi Crass’ : Have you got projects at the moment like a new submission at laFraise ? Some exclusivity to tell?
I want to finish my bathroom because with the temperatures at the moment, it is hard to wash into little stagnant water in a tarpaulin covered bathtub J Otherwise I have a comics projects but it’s moving slowly! Nothing really sexy, sorry for these wonderful exclusivities! J

Multi Crass’ : Do you have your driving license and what kind of car do you drive ?
I have my driving license and drive the others’ car!

Nath (lf crew) : Have you got other interests as graphic design ? What do you like?
I like playing with my Midi tab!

Nath (lf crew) : Are you a jolly fellow or a stay-at-home person?
I’m a jolly stat-at-home!

Nath (lf crew) : is there another country where you like to live in ?
Georgeslemercenaire advised me to go to Afghanistan!

Nath (lf crew) : Have you got a subliminal message?
I sell an Opel Corsa from 1998 (125 000 km / power steering / electric windows / central locking) for 1500 Euros (Not expensiveJ)
