Prints

Big congrats to the two winners of the week – to be printed on limited editions of 500 shirts!

Red Fury by Letter_Q

It’s been a while since we had a video game design – and this game was one of my favourites from the “good old days”. We also applauded the action shown on the shirt and mix of Little Miss “Kick-Ass” Riding Hood and the wolf.

126507

Falleció el último gran mago by PUHL

We’ve had some rabbit designs recently, but we simply couldn’t resist this one. We were very impressed with the illustration put into the rabbit’s face which pushed us over the edge. Well done PUHL!

Second place: 1 free t-shirt

Computer Mafia by Mekazo

We liked the execution of this design and the idea behind it, and since we’ve had such ctrl alt del designs before, we decided against a print. But, a well deserved second place!

Third place: 1300 brouzoufs

Very very old movie

very very old movie by georgeslemercenaire

A fun t-shirt at laFraise for all old Black & white movie lovers. Georges delivers a nice design and explain his motivation on it.

Hi Georges, nice to see you again!
A real pleasure :-)

What inspired the new design “Very, very old movie”? (Obviously, King Kong but how did you get the idea?)
I got the idea from watching my grandfather getting old, but I still see him as a strong man and he made me think about King Kong, and here is how my twisted mind made the association.

What kind of film do you like the most? Do you prefer old black & white movies from the 40’s or rather a spectacular special effects movie?
I watch everything I can get my eyes on; I am a voracious film watcher – from classic movies to the latest rubbish.

If you were a film director, what kind of movie would you do?
I would do Jurassic Park 4.

What TV shows do you watch and if yes, what’s your favourite?
I’m looking forward to seeing the next season of Misfits as well as Breaking Bad and I will watch the entire Battlestar Galactica series for the fourth time.

Do you collect things like stamps, post cards, unusual things?
I collect game consoles and computers (23 machines and I’ve got the games to go with them), sneakers, vinyl records, I also have small comics figurines and video games, a few art toys, I have a precious comics collection and magazines (like Fluide glacial, echo psykopat) .. Arg I’m going to look like an Otaku someday…

Do you like to stroll through flea markets?
Oh yeah and it is my favourite sport!

Are you a handy man? If yes what have you recently done?
Not really and as little as possible. Yesterday my cat locked me outside (at the time of the interview) – true story! I had to break the window to get in. So my next challenge will be to replace it!

Which recent laFraise shirts do you like the most?
Well if I would have to only choose two, it would be Wolfswing by s-a-m and overloaded by bubusam.

Thanks for this little interview :-)
Thanks to you!

Top Secret

Top secret by _S3_

An original t-shirt which tells us the evil plan to destroy the Earth. _S3_ has lots to say about it !

Hi _S3_

Could you please introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet?
Hi, I’m originally from Montreal but I have been living in Beijing since September. I started having some success here but I don’t think I will stay for many years, I don’t speak Mandarin and most of Chinese don’t speak English, so communication is quite difficult. I am graphic designer and I love t-shirts. I have worked for many different fashion companies for the last 5 years in Montreal and I have been a freelancer for 2 years now. I create designs for contest sites and I love to do what I love. It is my dream to create designs for t-shirts, which brings me to the next question.

Who are you, how and why did you get into graphic design?
I am a simple person who likes to do shirts or other designs; I am not looking to become rich, but just do what I like to do, maybe like everyone else / any other designer who loves drawing since childhood. It might look funny but my first studies were in administration but I got rid that of as I couldn’t pass my French tests, I am dyslexic but I didn’t know it at that time and I got a diagnosis last year, so that I could pass and get my diploma, finally!
And then I started to attend graphic design evening courses. At the school we had a screen print studio and I was always there making shirts or canvases for exhibitions. Since my portfolio had lots of t-shirts in it, when I looked for a job, I got into the fashion industry as a graphic designer.

Tell us the story behind “Top secret” What inspired you and how did you create the design?
I’m tripping on space themes and I try to create designs with 1 colour or at least with as few colours as possible. A blueprint was a nice idea to get less colours and I have had the idea in mind for a while. What made me act is the movie Despicable Me, in this movie we see a blueprint and it had had the atmosphere I wanted to have as a design, so the day after watching it, I was in the perfect mood to create this design! I drew all different elements separately, did a composition; I then print and scan them. I didn’t want it to be too clean; I still wanted the effect of the hand-drawing and the naïve side when you do it on the black board at school for example. And Marie argued about it because I sent the file as a PSD, so I’m looking forward to seeing what it will look like. I think I spent like 2/3 days on the design.

Have you got a plan for Earth’s destruction?
I did a secret plan but I don’t want to show it to people yet, as it will soon appear on a shirt. I hope nobody will prevent me from doing it! Hahahaahah

Who is your favourite artist/designer at the moment?
I love Konstantin Shalev, Cuypi, Jared Nickerson, Recycled Wax and lots more. And as well Jeff Soto, Andrew Bell.

What makes you laugh in life?
A bit of everything and especially bad jokes that nobody finds funny.

Do you have any passions other than graphic design? (Like photography, sculpture, sky diving…)
Yes fine art, photography, film and I watch one movie a day to relax when I have finished designing. I love going to hip hop, drum & bass parties or any other show that looks interesting.

Do you like space shuttles? Have you ever dreamt of going into the moon or becoming president?
When I was young, I dreamt I would design laFraise shirts!

If you were:
Never thought about it before!

A dish
A pizza

An animal
What is the animal that always eats … the or ….

A colour
I love cmyk pure colours

A place a city
I preach for my Montreal church, it is a city with lots of potential and talent, go there, but preferably in the summer!

A thing
My computer hehe

A tv show
I love South Park a lot but I wouldn’t be it. Otherwise we have this TV show in Quebec “Parents” I do not know if there is a French adaptation of it.

Have you got a last word for the community?
Thanks to all of you who voted for my design but most of all the 72 pre-orders, I hope it will become a t-shirt you guys love.
Keep on rocking!

L'ours noir

Ours noir by GUS

A drunk bear with cola, this is the new funny t-shirt at laFraise, designed by GUS. Check out what he has to say !

Hi GUS, nice to talk again !

What can you say about « L’ours noir » — how much time did you need for it ?

Hi folks,

How did the idea come? In a plane i think or maybe on a ship. One morning I heard a knock at my door and she stood there with her luggage. I was so happy! I brought her into the heart of Montreal. We spent a nice day together and decided to continue into the evening. She was holding out good, despite the jetlag. In the early morning the day after, our eyes really met. And I understood that it was not a tiny idea, but that together we could achieve great things.

What is the message of your design (Really because a drunk bear on the ice …)?

The message ? …. A bear…. drunk…. with cola…. On ice field!

Or even: On ice field…. drunk…. a bear…. with cola!

Or: On a cola, the drunk ice field with bear ! J
What is your favorite animal?

Brittany Oyster ! I love her sweet and caring sight, her nice dimples when she smiles at me

Have you ever wanted to be a vet as a child?
Not really. Most of the time I eat or draw animals.

Do you prefer Pepsi or cola?

I prefer the BRETZCOLA!!!!!!
Beer, wine or spirits?

All 3!!! All together!!! In eyes perfusion!!!!
What do you do when you are not drawing?

I’m actually working on a personal project In association with a fruits and vegetables market in Montreal that will be finished by the summer. We have the idea to use delivery tricycles to increase the food offering in isolated areas and to revitalize some districts by offering them local and seasonal fruits and vegetables. It is not a revolutionary project, but FYI Montreal is the only city in North America that doesn’t require special permission for mobile commerce. It wasn’t easy to get, but we just received the funding for this project, which is very close to my heart. I’m working hard on it and things go fast!

Do you know Karl ?

Do you know Karl? by Jott

A new original and refined t-shirt Do you know Karl ? by Jott … for those who have ever dreat og having a giant on thier own!

Could you please introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? How and why did you get into graphic design?
Hi my name is Tayo Gross AKA jott. I always wanted to do something creative so I decided to study communication design. When I finished this, I started working as a freelance illustrator, graphic designer
and stop-motion-addict. If you want to know more about me and my work … just visit my blog or my portfolio.

Tell us the story behind “Do you know Karl?” What inspired you and how did you create the design?
When I was a kid I always wanted to have a giant, friendly monster-friend like Karl. After 29 years of waiting I finally decided to get him on a shirt. So I took my pencil and got a first sketch on paper. Then I scanned it and finished it in illustrator.

Who is your favourite artist/designer at the moment?
There are a lot of really good ones out there. At the moment one of my faces is … alexmdc.

What makes you laugh and drives you in life?
Good music, good graphics, good people, good times!

Do you have any passions other than graphic design? (Like photography, sculpture, sky diving …)
Reading, swimming and riding my little pink pony … and Stop-Motion-Animation.

What is your favourite sport? Do you watch sports on TV?
Sorry no sports for me.

If you were:
A dish
Something full of colourful candy

An animal
Perhaps something between a monkey and a turtle … a murtle?

A colour
Neon white

A place
A wonderful forest on the rooftop of a skyscraper

A video game
The Day of the Tentacle

A TV show
Futurama

Something to say to the community?
Thanks to all for getting Karl printed. And now shameless self-promotion … if you like Stop-Motion-Animation take a look at … www.jottworld.net and go for Frau Neumann. That’s it. Once again thanks to all at laFraise.
