Here comes the sheriff

Here comes the sheriff by Jacopo

A funny shirt for a gangster story in the desert, surrounded by cactuses and a sheriff ! Gangters watch your steps!

Hi Jacopo, nice to see you back, it’s been a while!

What is the story behind “Here comes the sheriff”? How did you get the idea? Is it something you thought up or is it simply a bandit story you like? How long did it take to make it and how did you design it?

I was thinking about the strange shapes that cacti have, especially because they look like perfect cover. The inspiration was definitely the Western theme, because I can distinguish my little characters using different kind of hats and masks.

sheriff2

In this illustration my goal was to obtain an image that had two different points of view at the same time. A bunch of bandits are hiding behind the cacti, trying to avoid the sheriff’s sight they are assuming bizarre positions. This detail allowed me to work on the funny side of my illustration.

It took me a lot of time. Honestly I don’t remember exactly how much because I did this illustration like 3 years ago. As you can see I started with a handmade sketch, then I scanned it and digitally traced it.

Could you please draw me your interpretation of “Closed for the summer, we’re on holidays”? Thanks Jacopo

PRINTS

Two graphic t-shirt designs chosen as this week’s winners!

Alfred Island

Alfred Island by ch’père
A little inspiration from Hitchcock goes a long way – this shirt takes the mystery and horror from Alfred’s films and puts it on an island. Moons have been a big theme at laFraise recently, but this design convinced both the community and our team. Great job ch’père!

Somewhere

Somewhere by Graja
This made the winner’s circle for two reasons. Firstly, a great t-shirt design that immediately is recognised for what it refers to. Secondly, it is able to refer to that topic without infringing any copyright. We applaud Graja for both feats and suggest others use his approach as an example when dealing with designs that may infringe copyright.

Second place: 1 free t-shirt

Hairking

Hairking by nikor
We loved the faces and the framing of the hairstyles that nikor brought to this t-shirt design. We love seeing nikor bring his characters to life with their expressions. Well done!

Thrid place: 1300 brouzoufs

Jack vs. Door

Jack vs. Door by Mattdez
A nice and simple idea with a reference that Kubrick fans would immediately recognise. And also another example of a design that creatively avoids any copyright issues. Well done!

Interview with I lovedoodle

This is not a pipe-33

This is not a pipe by Ilovedoodle

A funny and humoristic shirt, a reference to Magritte’s, well done Ilovedoodle !

Please introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? When did you start with graphic design and why?

Hi there, my name is Lim Heng Swee. I am a self-taught illustrator/graphic designer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I have been working as a freelance illustrator since 2003. I love doodling, this is where all this started. Through illustrations and designs, I hope I’ll be able to doodle a smile on peoples’ faces.

What is the story behind “This is not a pipe”? How long did it take you and how did you create it?

This design is a fun take on Rene Magritte’s famous art piece, which I was so curious that if that’s not a pipe, what could it be? It took about half day to do this design after I decided to go ahead with this crazy idea J. As usual I started with sketch on paper and scanned it to work in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Could you please draw me your interpretation of “Closed for the summer, we’re on holidays”? Thanks Ilovedoodle

logo-laFraise_Avatar

We’ve updated the laFraise Terms and Conditions for the winning designs (they can be read in full here). But just so everyone is on the same page, here’s the basic change we have made.

When you submit a design to laFraise, you agree to hand over your rights to the design for a period of 5 years if it is selected for a print. The designer still receives €1,000 as a prize for the design to be printed 500 times on shirts. For every shirt sold beyond the initial print run of 500 shirts, a €2 commission is paid to the designer via their Spreadshirt account.

Let us know if you have any questions!

Happy Monday!

This Week’s Winners Selected for Prints!

We had a number of great submissions this week, making it one of those weeks where choices were many and decisions difficult to make.

130491

Regicide by Naolito

The King is dead – long live the King! A clever design by Naolito that has an instant impact. The community agreed with our thoughts and this design was a clear winner. And the design begs to answer the questions: who put him into check-mate and who made the final kill? A night? A queen? A bishop? Or perhaps a lowly pawn …

130576

Syper Saiyan by Lemerou

Manga is huge – especially in France. The community (along with a couple members of our team) were immediately in love this this design. Even though I know very little about Manga, we believed this design will light up the Manga community, both for those who wear it and those who see it on the street. A great example of successfully designing for a niche.

Second place: 1 free t-shirt

130566

Short Cut by Bubusam

We’ve had a number of Little Red Riding Hood designs come in recently. We chose this for a good second place winner due to its more poetic approach. We also liked the use of red throughout the design and the detail work with the trees and shadows. Well done Bubusam!

•••

Third place: 1300 brouzoufs

130460

Logan??? by Gprod

We wanted to honour this design for it’s great approach to a very copyrighted topic without actually infringing on the copyright itself. This is a great example of the depth designers can go to legally get certain themes on shirts with a twist of clever designing. Good job Gprod!

Two Designs Selected to be Printed in Limited Editions of 500 Shirts!

130255

Le bocal by Eown

An excellent use of glow in the dark ink – we joined the community in praising Eown’s design. You really never know what’s inside and we think those wearing this t-shirt design will certainly get some great reactions when it starts getting dark.

130246

Caution, pedestrian crossing by Ike Motta

Motta also captured the community’s votes this week with this monster of a design. Yet another shirt will be available for you to prepare for the zombie apocalypse. How about a late night brain-snack? Perhaps this design will be in the shop in time for Halloween!

•••

Second place: 1 free t-shirt

YO3

Yosushi by Zguig

As a big Mario fan, I was hoping this design would make the cut – but with such strong competition this week, it came in at a respectable second place. Just like any old-school gamer, I very much hope this design finds its way back as a submission. Maybe with some wasabi and soy sauce? ;)

•••

Third place: 1300 brouzoufs

130253

Fable by Raffu

We were also a big fan of the Fable and it’s mix of The Fox and the Crow and Mozilla products. We certainly loved the style and colours in this design and commend it with a third place position on the podium. Well done Raffu!

juuuiiiice

Juuuiiice by Pandaluna

A funny shirt designed by Pandaluna who explains the reason why of this nasty orange :-)

Hi Pandaluna
Hi Nathalie :-)

Nice to speak to you again :-)
The same, it’s like coming back home.

What is the story behind “Juuuiiice”? Is it a halloween theme or is there a hidden message? How long did it take to make it and how did you proceed?
The juuuiiiice story is very simple. I was walking in the street (Yes, I enjoy walking as it makes my ideas clearer, I’m getting old I guess …) and I saw an orange peel on the ground and my brain got it right, which led me to a weird idea. I imagined the orange with some skin left over and told myself it could be a zombie orange. Then I asked myself how it would feed itself … with a straw and feeding on another orange’s pulp.

As for its realization I did a sketch and then worked on it on Illustrator. The longest part was the colouring and I must thank my girlfriend for her help :-) We worked a lot on the rotten orange color and how to make this orange look like a zombie and I think we got it right. So it took me a whole afternoon.

Can you draw your interpretation of “Closed for the summer, we’re on vacation?” Thanks Pandaluna !

PRINTS

Two designs chosen to be printed in limited editions of 500 shirts!

be creative

Be creative by OxyCygo

A morbidly funny design takes the cake again at laFraise – this fish just couldn’t take it anymore. The same bowl, the same castle, the same food. You could almost understand his situation between a bowl and a hard place. A very creative way to end his life below the water – but where did he get that balloon?

Print

Easy Way by diekave

Who said laziness wouldn’t get you anywhere? This little mouse took the easy way to find his cheese – not to say he wouldn’t have made it through the maze. We liked this original t-shirt design and think it is perfect for any problem solver. Kind of reminded me of this story.

•••

Second place: 1 free t-shirt

129960

Jus d’orange by IKS

We loved the style in this design and the use of colour – and it was a sure second place, even close to a print. We’d love to see some more of this kind of illustration style – of course mixing with fruit can help, but not necessarily ;)

•••

Third place: 1300 brouzoufs

130071

Bwaaa by Jacqueline-la-sardine

Simple and green with instant understanding. We were big fans of this design, it simply made us chuckle and burp loudly. Keep up the great work Jacqueline!
