Stumbled across this photographer the other day and thought you might enjoy. She is mainly a fashion photographer so figured that went right along with laFraise. Plus I don’t mind giving a fellow Canadian some extra press :)
Her screen name is Magdalena M and she hails from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
You can view a chunk of her work over at Behance.
Just a quick reminder guys, today is the last day for your Gaia submissions, so get them in as soon as you can!
We’ve already seen some nice submissions but remember the theme is “The Beauty of Mother Nature”.
Good luck!
(full details on this design can be found at Jthreeconcepts)
Could you please introduce yourself for the community who don’t know you yet? Who are you, how did you get into graphic design and why?
Hello everybody, my name is Rafaël, freshly into my thirties, and living in Montpellier for the past couple of years. At this precise moment, I am more looking like a puddle of sweat at his desk than the profile of a beautiful young man, as I usually am, but no one should complain, right?
My interest in comics led me to go to school at Les beaux arts in Angoulème, but I quickly realised that I was not talented enough for graphic narration and I was more excited by drawing. So for the past 3 years I have tried to make a living with my illustrations – and during this time I discovered a certain website with a strawberry form and started to submit some t-shirt designs. I have also started to paint recently, and I try to enjoy the freedom of this medium, where I don’t have to answer to any limitations, neither graphic or technical.
Can you please tell us the story behind Pretty Becky? What inspired you and how did you create the design?
This design represents my mood at the moment. I’m jumping from one side of my work to another, from children’s illustration with its limits to more personal stuff. With this design, I wanted to confront different styles: sweet cartoons and some realistic drawings, and make things work together. Like my design Anita and the sexy Penguins, I thought it was fun to represent animal cartoon characters who have suggestive looks and intentions for a young and beautiful pin-up.
So… I started to work on the pin-up’s drawing and then I integrated the bunnies with their lewd expressions, and then, hop! I put them in a car on a background with beach and palm trees, and I finished with the text. Well, this design was built a little like a puzzle, I pasted the elements together. Some people told me that this design was degrading to rabbits…
What is your favorite artist/designer at the moment?
Because I am very impressionable in my work (but in my life I am a very aggressive business man with a huge ambition that nothing and nobody can disturb from his goals ;-) ), I try to not have any influences and risk doing things “like Machin or Bidule” (and I think that most people can already feel lots of influences in my work).
Other than that, not so long ago I discovered the work of Joe Daly that I am really digging now. You absolutely have to read Dungeon Quest – 1&2.
Now I’m not a big Air Jordans fan to be honest, I’ve never even worn a pair, too “basketball” for me. I do however love the Blazer Mid series of Nike shoes in all formats/colorways. I think I own about 7 pairs of them.
With that said though I’m always on the look out for slick sneakers design, and these fell across my lap a few days back.
Again, not my type of shoe, but I’m really enjoying the blue colorway and it’s a good example of basketball shoes that don’t suck and make you look like a douche. Full info here
As for the Blazers I spoke about earlier, here are a few of my select favs (which include the mid and high series):
As you can see my taste in shoes reflects my style of illustration.
As a member of this great community I am so happy to team up with the laFraise crew and all of you on our Gaia Contest being in full swing right now. Gaia is a community project to raise awareness for climate change through digital art.
I started the Gaia Project in 2007 with a group of talented designers from great communities such as the Behance Network and deviantArt. Everyone, equal if professional, passionate or engaged is invited to join our team. Altogether we have over 5,000 actively engaged artists all over the world from France, Germany, Sweden, India, China, USA to Africa, creating digital art for the Gaia Project. I believe in the community. And I am convinced we all as a powerful and actively engaged swarm are the ones to change our world for the better. But what can we do? Let´s do what we do best here! Create beautiful illustrations and remind people of the beauty of mother nature. I know all of you have great talent to do this and beside this there are great prices waiting for you!
Contest theme: “The Beauty of Mother Nature”
You have 7 days left to show your unique view of mother natures beauty. Almost every artist mentions nature as a main inspiration for her or his work. The amazing amount of detail, the beauty of aesthetics and harmonic shapes. Or the beautiful mess of raw nature. The Gaia Project is a positive movement based on this beauty. It is a project to raise awareness for this beauty and remind us about it while creating our art, sharing it with our friends and presenting it on our computer screens, mobile devices and soon one beautiful T-Shirt ;). Your message will spread all over the world and everyone seeing this design will be reminded and surely do something good to our planet. This is our philosophy and everyone´s who is joining us. So open up your creative tool of choice and join us the next 8 days!
The prize: 1000€, 500 Prints, exclusive artist features on the Ouidoo Gaian mobile device and an interview on the Gaia website!
I know how hard it sometimes is to be recognized as an artist. And I care about all the members of the Gaia Community. So I talked to our partners this year and we have excellent prices waiting for you!
Thanks to our great laFraise crew the winner of this contest will get excellent exposure having the design printed on 500 organic shirts plus 1000€. As there are already submissions representing the beauty of mother nature we also decided to give the participants even more chances to be recognized on a big platform. A selected series of great submissions will be exclusively featured on the Ouidoo Gaian mobile our partner QderoPateo will release later this year.
Your work will come pre-installed with every sold device as a wallpaper to be used by a big community of clients! Not that this is amazing enough, if our partner loves your design even more they will create a public commercial for the Ouidoo Gaian with your great talent in the team.
And most important: Inspiration! So what are you going to create? Need some inspiration to get into the groove? I collected some of the most beautiful works we recieved last year plus my favorite movie related to climate change.
Not enough? Then download a free copy of our music album from last year here!
There are many forms of inspiration on the net, one of which I’m starting to appreciate more and more are music videos. Now it doesn’t seem like as much effort is put into music videos as there use to be. I’m sure the age of the internet has a big part in that along with just the overall saturation of the music industry. A music video just seems like a technicality now. With that said, here are a few of my favs over the last little while.
As always I love sharing with the laFraise community, so here is a project just came under completion:
This issue will be released July 15th and features 30+ character artists including a few laFraise designers as well!
If you haven’t guessed it yet this issue is specific to “character design” and also features a 6-8 page feature+interview with myself (Jared Nickerson).
The cover itself took about a month to finalize. Thanks to Jeremyville for the base/background, and thanks to Alan Wardle of Computer Arts for collecting and sorting the various characters.
I handled the finalization of the overall design from arrangement to smaller details to adding and balancing characters from various artists including myself.
Pickup the issue to learn full details on the making of the cover along with words from every artist involved.
I’m overall happy with the result and experience. Make sure to grab your copy July 15th or towards the end of the month in North America.
