Typo Tutorials + Tips + Inspirations

From J3Concepts (Crew), on 2009-09-18 at 08:26

I’ve noticed over the past few years, I rising trend of missused typography in design, and more specific in tshirt design.
People tend to use typo to fill space, no matter how unsuited the font is.
This can make or break a design.

Now using typo as an addition or to compliment a design is encouraged, but missue is very easy and can create a very unbalanced design both stylishly and practically.

Now I’m no pro on the subject, but I like to think I know how to use a bit of typo here and there.

Duke of Hoxton (Process)

From J3Concepts (Crew), on 2009-09-15 at 09:48

I finished work for a client a few weeks back called Duke of Hoxton. They are a clothing company based out of London, England.
This is roughly how the process went:
The client’s idea was to have the left side of the crest design more traditional posh British and the right side to be more “street” and rough.
I haven’t done a more classic crest style in years, so this was interesting to get back into. We of course went through numerous drafts before the final version below was decided on…

Quick Illustrator Tutorials

From J3Concepts (Crew), on 2009-08-13 at 09:02

First up is GoMedia’s own Jeff Finley showing how to create tattered scrolls in Illustrator, handy. Isn’t so much a tutorial as it is a speed drawing, but you get the idea.

Draw an old-world style tattered scroll from scratch from Go Media on Vimeo.

Next up is a “sexy” tutorial more covering some abstract vector elements.

Sexy Shapes to Sexy Abstracts from Ren Zhang on Vimeo.

A very simple tutorial on how to make basic pattern fills.

Quick Tip #4 – Illustrator Patterns from Niki Brown on Vimeo.

This last one is also handy, has a few tips n tricks that you might find useful. And it’s applicable to laFraise designers. Some good tips on prepping designs for print.

Vector Tutorials

From J3Concepts (Crew), on 2009-04-29 at 08:31

I stumbled across a number of vector tutorials the other day, some of which are excellent for laFraise designers.

First of which is How to Illustrate a LeBron James Cartoon Character. Great style and technique in this one, def worth a try.

Another is one I had recently done for Computer Arts UK. Specific to tshirt designs and you might find some of the tips handy. Full tutorial is downloadable here.

And last but not least is not so much a tutorial as it is a general illustrator lesson. Checkout Improve Your Designs Skills by Luke O’Neil for some great tips.

Computer Arts Tutorial April 2009

From J3Concepts (Crew), on 2009-03-31 at 11:10

Just thought I’d share my latest tutorial with you guys. This one was actually featured in the latest Issue of Computer Arts Magazine. (April 2009).

Now I can’t post the full tutorial but I encourage you to keep checking the Computer Arts Website as it will eventually hopefully be posted there. Or, you can stop reading this post right now, get up off your lazy ass, and go grab a copy of the latest issue in newstands now.

The idea of the tutorial was to teach you balance and organization when dealing with numerous vector elements. Along with that I touched on some minor techniques and shortcuts.

Either way here are are a few pics for you to get the gist of the tutorial.

More pics here.

Also a small reminder, the contests Lodown, Lafayette and the No Limit are now closed for submissions.
