Pomelo is dead by TED BOUNDY
Citrus fruits’ killer ! Pomelo is dead is the new funny tee shirt at laFraise, designed by TED BOUNDY who delivers a very nice interview.
Hi Ted Boundy
Could you introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? How and why did you get into graphic design?
I’m Teddy B (Which explains my pseudonym, I’m 34 years old and a graphic designer.
I drew a lot as a child, well I was playing with my drawings like others play with toys: it was some crossing-out for laser pistols and big scrabbles for explosions which gave some rhythm to the fights of my imaginary superheroes. I’ve always been drawing something and naturally I went to art school after I have graduated.
After 5 years of studies, I traveled to Indonesia and had a brief stay in a start-up, a job at la Fnac record store, I became a graphic designer for a small agency which works for big food brands. laFraise came afterwards and it was a perfect way for me to practice illustration: No constraints and no orders, the occasion to go on playing with images and money to travel now and then on this beautiful planet (and thanks to laFraise for that).
Can you tell us the story behind “Pomelo is dead”? What inspired you to create this design for the Bloody Cute Contest? Did you have any difficulties?
I love to humanize objects in general, add eyes to an egg or a fruit and make it in an absurd situation and it’s a lot of fun (I’m a big boy …) I’m much more a fan of the idea rather than the realization and what I most enjoy is creating the first sketches, when I tell myself a story and I laugh at my idea. After putting the final touches, the software and the work on the image, the adult comes back and makes the first sketch more rational. For Pomelo is dead, I do not remember when the idea came out, probably during breakfast, my brain isn’t working at 200% when I wake up.
Have you ever had a lack of inspiration and what do you do?
Arggh, white page or white screen, the big white … The best I think is to change your activity, hunt a bear, parachute out of a plane, insult your neighbors or go out for a coffee, and of course surf sites like ffffound … well take a break and it comes back.
Who is your favorite artist/designer at the moment? Why?
I like easy and simple designs, illustrators like Simon Oxley or Sasha Barr and everything that is a bit retro 50’s but I do not have an exceptional culture on graphic design and illustration. I prefer a good science fiction book or comics. The last blast I’ve seen was with “Monkey Bizness” by Pozla and El Diablo, a big scenario blast and a great cutting with “L’habitant de L’infini”, a great manga for lovers of Japanese swords.
If you weren’t a graphic designer, what would you have done for a living?
I love traveling and I love coming back with weird objects, I could have seen myself in a little shop selling rag-bags with strange objects to bargain hunters.
Do you like fruit?
Pink grapefruit with a drink which ends with ka.
Do you feel closer from the real Ted Boundy, the serial killer or the one of the TV show “Married with Children”?
I’m Al from the TV show and there is a O in my Boundy o like Funny (Rigolo in french) but I keep my family to me.
A last word?
Kisses to my Boundy family with an O.
