back to the roots: the classic selection

From Thomas (Crew), on 2013-05-16 at 15:30

Dear Fraisiens,

it’s been a while since we´ve had so many high scored designs in one week!

Surprisingly we´ve made a selection which reminds me of the early times of laFraise. To me, both winner designs already could have been famous shirts back in 2009. One look = one laugh.
Without graphic wildstyle and overflowing skillz.
That’s why we thought it would be legitimately to make a  true “classic” selection. Our congrats and greeting are going out to Ted Boundy and Yurilobo.

Today, Malo & The Whale is unfortunately not part of the 1st placed design, because we already have three of his artworks in our pipeline to go. At first they need to be released (coming within the next weeks, promised!) AdamLawless‘ design is a great one with an interesting idea in behind, but we were not quite sure if this design would be a choice for everyone of our fans.

Once again, thanks for this great week with great designs and a real tough decission!
Congrats to all participiants and keep on trying!

Rockers!

Interview with Guillaume

From Katinka (Crew), on 2012-02-15 at 19:00

community interview

A new wonderful interview with a great member of the laFraise community. Give it up for: Guillaume!

Hi Guillaume,

Please introduce yourself in a few sentences, where do you come from and what do you do?
In a few lines, I have lived in south of France, and then in different places in France until I came to Paris a year ago. I am a tyrant in life but I cannot live from that, so I design shoes.

How long have you known laFraise and how did you hear about it? What do you like about it?
I heard about laFraise about 6/7 years ago but it was by chance as I was surfing on the net and looking around because I wanted to print some of my drawings on shirts. I loved the fact that your shirts are limited and the huge creativity found in some of them. It’s not the kind of shirt you see everyone wearing and when you wear a laFraise shirt everybody looks at it.

What are your hobbies, passions and interests?
I love bursting bubble wrap as my number one activity, and then bothering my friends, pulling jokes on people, fashion, graphic designs, and video games. I also play with Legos. I love art rock and my girlfriend of course.

Guillaume

Among all of your laFraise shirts, what are your top 3?
- My old sweet hoodie one « New York loves Me »
- A grey one with a boy shooting on cars (sorry I do not remember the name of it)
- « Green monster » but as a first edition please

Who is your favourite designer at laFraise?
I do not have specific favorite designers; I love the design most than the designer even if I love Georgeslemercenaire’s style for instance.

What are your expectations this year?

Designs with a connection with “Back to the future”, I missed some shirts at that time. Or maybe I want to become the richest man or buy a country or lead this country and keep on not growing up.

What would you be if you were?
- A flower: Narcissus without hesitation

- An animal: A fennec or a hyena because we do not speak about it that much and I love hyenas.

- A celebrity (dead or alive): Banksy (I would love to have his talent and his never-ending and overwhelming ideas)

- A colour: Grey

- A music genre: Rock

- A shirt colour: 19-4025 tpx

A last word? Kamoulox ! (A parody of a French game show)

UV Express by TED BOUNDY

A funny shirt for the summer if want to improve your tan. Well done TED BOUNDY !

Hi TED

Glad to see you again,

I’m happy to be featured on the blog and Hi to the new and oldest fans of laFraise!

What’s the story behind “UV Express”? How long did it take to create it and how did you design it? Is it a private joke or are you a big fan of UV yourself? An ode to the summer maybe?

Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away … nope it should have started with breakfast, some toast with my reptilian brain having control of it and with a graphic collision at the end. Everyday life and all small objects inspire me. As for the toaster, I had some designs of it on my computer from November 2010 (when I get an idea, I rarely draw it completely – I put it aside, get back to it, make sketches, think about it several times and it can take a long, long time) and at the end I kick my ass to finalize it. I prefer to feed my brain with such stuff like this blog.

As for UV, yes I am a big fan and I’m as orange as a construction site’s plug (without the phosphorescent strips). I’m going to Douarnenez this summer and I’ll be the most tanned person in Brittany gniak gniak. “In Brittany, good weather happens several times a day” as the saying goes, so I wish them lots of sun whenever possible!

Could you please draw your representation of “Closed for the summer, we’re on holidays”? Thanks TED

Pomelo is dead by TED BOUNDY

Citrus fruits’ killer ! Pomelo is dead is the new funny tee shirt at laFraise, designed by TED BOUNDY who delivers a very nice interview.

Hi Ted Boundy

Could you introduce yourself to those in the community who don’t know you yet? How and why did you get into graphic design?
I’m Teddy B (Which explains my pseudonym, I’m 34 years old and a graphic designer.
I drew a lot as a child, well I was playing with my drawings like others play with toys: it was some crossing-out for laser pistols and big scrabbles for explosions which gave some rhythm to the fights of my imaginary superheroes. I’ve always been drawing something and naturally I went to art school after I have graduated.

After 5 years of studies, I traveled to Indonesia and had a brief stay in a start-up, a job at la Fnac record store, I became a graphic designer for a small agency which works for big food brands. laFraise came afterwards and it was a perfect way for me to practice illustration: No constraints and no orders, the occasion to go on playing with images and money to travel now and then on this beautiful planet (and thanks to laFraise for that).

Can you tell us the story behind “Pomelo is dead”? What inspired you to create this design for the Bloody Cute Contest? Did you have any difficulties?
I love to humanize objects in general, add eyes to an egg or a fruit and make it in an absurd situation and it’s a lot of fun (I’m a big boy …) I’m much more a fan of the idea rather than the realization and what I most enjoy is creating the first sketches, when I tell myself a story and I laugh at my idea. After putting the final touches, the software and the work on the image, the adult comes back and makes the first sketch more rational. For Pomelo is dead, I do not remember when the idea came out, probably during breakfast, my brain isn’t working at 200% when I wake up.

Have you ever had a lack of inspiration and what do you do?
Arggh, white page or white screen, the big white … The best I think is to change your activity, hunt a bear, parachute out of a plane, insult your neighbors or go out for a coffee, and of course surf sites like ffffound … well take a break and it comes back.

Who is your favorite artist/designer at the moment? Why?
I like easy and simple designs, illustrators like Simon Oxley or Sasha Barr and everything that is a bit retro 50’s but I do not have an exceptional culture on graphic design and illustration. I prefer a good science fiction book or comics. The last blast I’ve seen was with “Monkey Bizness” by Pozla and El Diablo, a big scenario blast and a great cutting with “L’habitant de L’infini”, a great manga for lovers of Japanese swords.

If you weren’t a graphic designer, what would you have done for a living?
I love traveling and I love coming back with weird objects, I could have seen myself in a little shop selling rag-bags with strange objects to bargain hunters.

Do you like fruit?
Pink grapefruit with a drink which ends with ka.

Do you feel closer from the real Ted Boundy, the serial killer or the one of the TV show “Married with Children”?
I’m Al from the TV show and there is a O in my Boundy o like Funny (Rigolo in french) but I keep my family to me.

A last word?
Kisses to my Boundy family with an O.

Bloody cute: the winners

From Dave (Crew), on 2010-09-23 at 15:30

I’d first like to thank everyone for this fantastic contest! It was loads of fun, with a gallery full of really good designs and a total of 279 submissions accepted. Yeah! Making a choice was, as always, very bloody difficult. We finally decided to select two designs for printing (this will change the prizes a little). The lucky winners of the Bloody Cute Contest are:

First place: Print on 500 laFraise shirts
+ 1 Wacom INTUOS4 L graphic tablet

121881

Cute Cat by happyfish

We came to a decision within a few minutes for this design – now we just need to decide with happyfish which color shirt we will use (cream or light blue…)

•••

Second place: Print on 500 laFraise shirts
+ 1 Pantone Colour Guide  and 1 calibration tool

121741

Pomelo is dead by Ted Boundy

Ted is back with this gruesome design! And we are very happy to send another of his designs to the printer.

•••

Third place: 1 Pantone Colour Guide  and 1 calibration tool

121920

Chamallow by Eown

Marie was really, really sad that she wasn’t able to convince the crew to award a third print for the Contest (she was hoping to see this on a hoodie).

•••

Honorable Mention: 1 free shirt

121792

to Lufograph. This was another one of our favourite submissions, and he submitted several good designs for this contest. Certainly worth a mention!

Congrats to the winners, and thanks again to everyone who participated
